Kinky Curly Custard & Knot Today Review

I'm on YouTube almost everyday to find out the lastest products and style techniques that are going on in the "all natural" hair world. Kinky Curly Custard and Knot Today Leave-In Conditioner are very popular products in the natural hair community. So, I figured if everyone was raving over it that I should try it. When I saw that the Kink Curly Custard was 31.99 for 16oz. and the Knot today was 12.99 for 12oz. I quickly changed my mind. My hair is fine but it's super thick and usually I have to use lots of product in it. I was thinking Im not paying almost 45.00 for those 2 products and pay shipping and handling,  cause my hair will drank that straight up!

There is also a smaller hooplah on youtube about the homeade flaxseed gel which some feel is comparable to the Kinky Curly product.  I watched several tutorials on how to make it and made some myself. Lets just say I was less than pleased. The consistancy of the  homeade flaxseed gel was a cross between snot and eggs whites. I applied it to my hair hesitantly, and to my surprise it really defined my curly and dried quite nicely- with not much shrinkage. Unfortunately, when I woke up in the morning I had a head full of curls coated with white flakes... I even tried to alter the formula by replacing the water with leave-in conditioner, adding melted shea butter to the recipe and using less of it. I applied it again and got the same results. The flax seed gel was a NO GO.

So I continued to do my usual youtube browsing and still kept hearing "Kinky Curly Custard" all the time. So I decided to watch a bunch of tutorials on how to apply it and watch reviews on the product. 97% of the reviews were excellent, and I also found out they sold it locally at Whole Foods. I purchased the two products. When I first opened them up to take a wiff and see what it smelled like, I smelled coconut with a hint of almond. It smells really tropical like a light- refreshing pina colada.  I applied them according to the directions and tutorials I watched on youtube. 1) Wash and condition hair 2) Part hair in sections 3) Apply leave-In Conditioner first, then Custard to dripping wet hair.... and lets's just say I was impressed at how my hair was so curly and defined and the thing is, I used very little product.  If your hair is not saturated with water when you apply it to the sections you will have to use more product and I'm sure that's what will cause it to flake.  I used very little product, and honestly I probably have enough for about 10 more applications.

The only thing I don't like about the Kinky Curly Custard is that my hair felt crunchy after it dried. It didn't look dry but it felt hard. I've watched YouTube videos where other ladies that use it apply whipped Shea butter with it and had better results.  I don't think Kinky Curly Custard will be one of  my must-have hair products because for 31.99 it should stand alone and I shouldn't have to add any products with it. The Knot-Today Leave-In Conditioner I will definitely keep on purchasing on a regular basis.

Concoction #1 Twisting Concoction

My Hair After Using My Homeade Twisting Concoction!

What You'll Need :

Jason Aloe Vera Gel
Castor Oil
Grapeseed Oil
Jojoba Oil
Tea Tree Oil
Empty Container

In an empty container add about 2 oz. of Jason’s Aloe Vera gel. A couple of nice size squirts of Castor oil. A couple of drops of the Grapeseed Oil and the Jojoba oil and one VERY SMALL drop of the Tea Tree Oil (Sorry, I don't really measure my ingredients). Then, mix together!

Your Results Should look like this!
(Your twisting concoction should be cream like in consistency. If the twisting concoction is separating or runny you need to add more Aloe Vera Gel. It should be nice, firm and smooth!)

I applied my twisting concoction to each individual section of my DRY hair as I do two-strand twists. The reason why I apply this concoction to dry hair is because I want my twists to be as stretched out as possible. Also, I have a very soft texture of hair and when you do twist on soft textures you have tendency to have major shrinkage as well as twists that don't hold up very long. And before you know it your hair looks like an afro! That sucks, especially when you've went through all the time and trouble of twisting it.  You don’t have to saturate the hair with this concoction because it is fairly thick and you don’t need a lot of it. While twisting pay special attention to your ends.  For best results let twists set overnight, untwist and rock your style!

Side note:
All these ingredients were purchased at Whole Foods.
Jason’s Aloe Vera Gel is actually for the skin. The reason I didn’t use regular Aloe Vera Gel is because it’s not quite thick enough. Most of the ingredients in Jason’s Aloe Vera Gel are natural and I feel it is totally safe for hair.
